Keelung Fort Commander's Official Residence

Li's House quietly located on Zhongzheng Road was originally the residence of President Ryusui Weisuke. It was built in the sixth year of Showa, which is exactly 70 years ago. It was once the official residence of the fortress headquarters after the Taiwan restoration. The land is still owned by the military. The building is a Japanese-style wooden structure, with excellent materials, scale, and spatial form.

Keelung Fort Commander’s Residence

The official residence districts were established based on regional conditions. In pursuit of living functions, the official residence districts tend to have a close relationship with the Han Chinese communities. In the official residence district, official residences of the same level will be concentrated together, and there will be a certain distance between the offices and the residences. These official residence districts were established in the undeveloped space near Han Chinese villages, and there were even walls set up to avoid intersecting the living space of the Han people. In addition to the aforementioned official residences, the Ershawan area in Keelung still preserved the original official residences of the Department of Taxation when the Japanese first came to Taiwan; these official residences were colonial-style buildings with balconies, and they were also used as the office and official residence of the Taiwan Governor at that time, which is similar to the configuration of Keelung Fort Commander's Residence. According to the interview, we can learn that before the official residence was built, this area used to be the edge of Dashawan traditional village, but it was close to the Han Chinese villages and the market meanwhile, and therefore possessed considerable life functions. The conventional local Han people believed that this area was not suitable for living because it is adjacent to the French cemetery, plus it may also be the battlefield of Jiashen Battle; on the other hand, it was relatively less difficult for the authorities to acquire land. Therefore, setting up official residences here is understandable.
